Raising kids is not easy and for many, eating is one of the most stressful parts. All children are different and they behave differently in even the same situation. They are also unpredictable and can be erratic. This is especially true when it comes to eating which is why it causes many parents to become stressed, concerned, anxious, and controlling over food and mealtimes.
So, for the record, here are a list of things to expect with kids:
There are no normal eating behaviours in kids. Kids eat erratically.
As kids develop, they go through growth spurts, developmental changes, periods of exhaustion, illness, teething, and many other changes that will affect their appetite.
In the course of a day, a child’s appetite maybe different.
No two kids will eat the same. You may have multiple kids in your household and that will not mean they will like the same foods or even eat similarly at the same age. Everyone is different.
There are no favourite guaranteed foods. Just because your child ate a lot of a certain food one day does not mean he will eat it the next time it is served.
You can never predict what a child will eat. Even if you think you have your child’s tastes down, they constantly surprise parents with their choices on any given day.
Kids often eat only one or two items at a meal. Parents often have expectations of a “well rounded” meal to be consumed on a regular basis, which will only result in a lot of frustration.
If you are struggling with mealtimes, rest assured, your child is probably eating “normally” for a kid. Take a deep breath and know that you are doing your best.
